26 hours, 48minutes...Leafs TOP 10 PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike De Petrillo on Tuesday, 02 March 2010 14:13

altChristmas in March.  With that in mind, here is my wish list for the Leafs 2009/2010 NHL trade deadline, top 10 style:

  • 1) Unload potential UFA assets for draft picks and/or prospects - Ponikarovsky, Stempniak, Primeau, Exelby - thanks for the memories, Alex, give us your new cell number for July 1.
  • 2) Acquire a #1 centre - even if this means unloading the redundant (hello Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadri) Mikael Grabovski.
  • 3) Hold down Tomas Kaberle and poke his chest until he agrees to waive his limited NTC. Seriously Kabby, the writing is on the wall. Your 4th or 5th in D minutes on the Leafs lately...I think they're trying to tell you something. No shame in picking where you end up...
  • 4) SIZE. SIZE. Get me some size who can skate and bang. Please.
  • 5) Stock some draft picks...I don't care what round.
  • 6) Can someone please explain to me what being a buyer and a seller means? It's my wish list, so someone please fill me in on this strategy.
  • 7) Acquire a legitimate top 6 forward - seems to be a fire sale in EDM...
  • 8) Surprise us again Burkie - I like the fact little rumours on return for our players are hitting the web/TV/print. We never heard a peep about Phaneuf and Giggy until it happened...hopefully the same will happen today/tomorrow.
  • 9) Did I mention getting bigger and adding SIZE?
  • 10) Jordan Staal. That is all.

Back to the grind for Leafs players, as NHL play resumes PDF Print E-mail
Written by Ben Fisher on Monday, 01 March 2010 18:44

altOf all the interesting instances that will pop up over the next few days as national rooting interests are set aside again in favour of battle lines associated with NHL allegiances, perhaps none will be more intriguing than in Toronto.

A good chunk of Yonge street in and around Dundas Square was shut down for patriotic revellers last night in the aftermath of Canada's gold medal victory over the US in men's hockey. Many of the flag-wavers and celebrators who took to the streets will now be transferring their passion back towards Leafs Nation, even if it means supporting three key cogs in the US men's hockey team.

It sets up some interesting scenarios as we get set for tomorrow night's Leafs / Hurricanes tilt at the ACC. Do Phil Kessel, USA head coach Ron Wilson and USA GM Brian Burke get booed? Does Carolina / Team Canada forward Eric Staal get cheered? How will the USA-Maple Leaf trio feel about a continued Canadian love-fest among the ACC faithful?

Once the dust settles, the 2010 Olympic Winter Games will be all but a fond memory for Canadians who saw their best athletes thrive on home soil and hockey fans will refocus their attention to the NHL as the play-off push resumes (oops, sorry Toronto!). But it's a fascinating state of mind for hockey players, who still range from euphoric joy (see Crosby, Sidney) to woeful misery (see Ovechkin, Alex) to plain and simple heartbreak (see Miller, Ryan). Oh, and by the way guys, not only do you have to get right back into NHL mode, but the trade deadline comes on Wednesday!

Yes, it's a lot to absorb, so let's take a moment to catch up on where we stand with some Leafs players as the Olympic break ends, NHL play resumes and the trade deadline looms.

The Olympians

With no Leafs on Team Canada, there won't be any members of the blue and white sporting gold around their necks. However, Kessel was awarded a silver medal as part of Team USA, for whom he contributed a goal and an assist in six games. Tomas Kaberle finished with three points (one goal, two assists) for seventh-place Czech Republic, while Jonas "the Monster" Gustavsson backstopped Sweden to a preliminary win over Belarus in his lone appearance in the tournament.

The Olympic Break-ers

Maple Leaf players who did not make Olympic rosters have been back in town resuming regular practices with assistant coaches for over a week now, but many made the most of their time off.

- Fredrik Sjostrom returned to Calgary to pick up his girlfriend, as well as a few front teeth he lost before coming to Toronto in the Dion Phaneuf trade. He was being fitted with replacements by a dentist, but had to put the fitting on hold when he was sent to Toronto.

- Carl Gunnarsson took his girlfriend to New York City.

- Jean-Sebastien Giguere went to Mexico on a family vacation.

- Nikolai Kulemin and Phaneuf spent their break in town taking in the sights and sounds of T.O. Phaneuf was spotted at a recent Raptors game with his girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert.

The Trade Bait

Forgive Burke if Wednesday's NHL trade deadline has not been at the forefront of his thoughts, considering he flew directly to Vancouver for the Olympic tournament after spending time with family in the wake of his son Brendan's death. However, he has been involved in trade talks while assistant GM Dave Nonis has been at the centre of negotiations.

The team has reportedly received two trade offers for Alex Ponikarovsky, who appears to be the most likely player to go. Toronto has also fielded calls about Lee Stempniak and Wayne Primeau, who would certainly be moved for the right price. In fact, you'd have to figure that Leafs brass would be listening to any call that does not include the names Kessel, Phaneuf, Schenn or Gustavsson. Just don't expect anything matching the magnitude of January's mega-trade.

We're Back! (Finally) Leafs Nation is in for a wild ride this week... PDF Print E-mail

altWe're back!  Finally...a team to watch with the right coloured Maple Leaf on their jersey.  Congratulations to Team Canada for their thrilling OT win over the Americans yesterday afternoon...I can definitely tell you my life expectancy was decreased by at least 5 years.  What a game.  What an Olympics.

While I'm at it - and because I'm such a good sport - congrats to Brian Burke, Ron Wilson and Phil Kessel for a great and surprising tournament.

Well done Vancouver.  Now it's back to pointing out to Canucks fans every time they chirp the Leafs that even though the Leafs are re-building and at the bottom of the standings, the Canucks have never won a Stanley Cup.  I never get tired of that.   I just don't know what it is about Canucks fans...must be the weather in BC.

So here we are - less than 48 hours from the second trade deadline of the 2009/2010 season.

Fact:

Alexei Ponikarovsky, Lee Stempniak, Garnett Exelby, Wayne Primeau and Tomas Kaberle are all still current members of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Most, if not all, won't be able to say that Wednesday after 3:00PM.

With the buzz at the Olympics being that Kaberle had changed his mind (again) and would be willing to consider a deal at the NHL trade deadline, reports began surfacing yesterday and today that this is not the case.  Anyone else grossly disappointed?  Love Kaberle's ability; don't love his intensity and willingness to accept underachieving.  Do you want to control your own destiny Tomas, or leave it BB and Dave Nonis this summer at the draft?

A big thank you goes out to Florida Panthers for increasing the trade value of big #23 - a second round pick for Leopold?  Gotta love having assets in a seller's market.

I would have taken a face off in the opposing zone and a tank of Zamboni propane for Wayne Primeau and/or Garnett Exelby 3 weeks ago - now I'm not so sure that's enough.  Could the Leafs get some value at the deadline?

Just because I am so nice - thanks again to the Flames organization for bailing the Leafs out.  Have fun with Matt Stajan the next four years.  Gotta love our Alberta brothers - every 15-20 years they love lobbing us a grapefruit to know out of the park - grapefruit #1 Dougie Gilmour.  #2 - our friend Dion.

So what's going to happen Leafs Nation?  Who stays?  Who goes?  Who will find themselves in the fold and in the plans of Burke and Co. as they re-build "Big Blue"?

Buckle up - Burkie's obviously been hanging out with David Blaine and Chriss Angel (his 15 minutes went by fast didn't they?) a lot of late...let's see if he has anymore new magic tricks to show us this week.

Leafs Game Night (at last) Pre-Olympic Trade Deadline Round-up PDF Print E-mail
Written by Mike De Petrillo on Friday, 12 February 2010 14:17

altCounting down...

With just under 3 hours (ET) to the pre-Olympic trade deadline, players across the league are anxiously keeping one eye on the clock, the other on their cell phones.

Earlier today, Ottawa shipped defender Alex Picard and a 2nd round pick to Carolina for Matt Cullen, the first of many moves expected to go down for the re-building Hurricanes.

Last night, Montreal shipped a 2nd round pick on 2011 to Florida for C Dom Moore.  I couldn't help but chuckle at this deal.  It seems John Ferguson Jr.'s crowning achievement as GM of the Leafs was plucking the plucky C off the waiver wire from the Minnesota Wild, ironically enabling incoming GM Brian Burke to flip him to Buffalo at last year's deadline for...you guessed it, a 2nd round pick.

On its face, neither of these deals are earth shattering, but I do selfishly have a Spockian eyebrow raised at the return for the two most recent players dealt in the NHL and how it impacts what the blue and white may fetch for some of their expiring contracts - Alexei Ponikarovsky and Lee Stempniak first and foremost amongst them.

Let's have a look at the stats:

Recently Traded Rental Players:

Dominic Moore

GP          G             A             PIM        +/-

48           8              9              35           -7

Matt Cullen

GP          G             A             PIM        +/-

60           12           28           26           E

Maple Leafs Available:

Alexei Ponikarovsky

GP          G             A             PIM        +/-

60           19           22           44           +5

Lee Stempniak

GP          G             A             PIM        +/-

60           14           15           18           -8

Moore garnered a 2nd round pick in 2011, while Cullen received a serviceable defender and a 2nd round pick in the 2010 entry draft.

Both scenarios are as close to 'apples to apples' comparisons as I can think.

If you apply similar values for the Leafs available, you may consider Lee Stempniak worthy of a future 2nd rounder - but you have to take into consideration a couple of factors:

  • -Stempniak's $2.5 million cap hit (pro-rated) makes him a tougher deadline acquisition to fit into a team's existing salary structure.
  • -Stempniak has similar numbers to Moore, however has played in 12 additional games this season.

Turning attention to Alexei Ponikarovsky, here is where I think the true value lays, and I believe a better return should be expected than what we saw in the Cullen deal:

  • -Younger
  • -Bigger
  • -Attractive salary
  • -More goals
  • -VERY defensively responsible

...these are obvious factors considering the big Ukraine's value.

With PIT rumoured to have interest, look for a player (Kennedy, Dupuis?) and a second round pick + coming back.

In Stempniak's case, I think the most Leafs Nation can hope for is a 3rd rounder.

Time will tell - I'll be back with more if the Leafs make any moves.

Tha begs the question:  What would you do?
