Buffalo got off to a quick start on Thursday night with a goal from Derek Roy. Later in the first, Jochen Hecht scored to give the Sabres a two goal lead. The shot went off of a Carolina player and into the net as Hecht earned his first goal in 11 games. Hecht didn't have any other options, so he shot it from a tough angle and it ended up going in. It's never a bad idea to shoot the puck.

The Hurricanes did get on the board towards the end of the period, scoring a power play goal to cut the lead in half. Brandon Sutter earned his 14th goal of the season.

As the midway point of the season came and went, the Buffalo Sabres were sitting comfortably atop the Northeast Division. Boston was the closest team team, but still trailed Buffalo by 12 points. Now, the Sabres have hit the biggest road bump of the season.

The west coast trip was just the beginning of the Sabres recent woes. The team has gone 2-8-1 in its last 11 games and find themselves clinging to a one point division lead. Ottawa has gone on a tear, winning its last 11 of 12.

The Sabres were hoping to snap a three game losing streak against Columbus. The last time these teams met was in 2008, when Columbus crushed Buffalo by a 6-1 score.

First place may be out of reach since Washington is on a 13 game winning streak, but the Sabres only trail the Devils by three points for 2nd place. Patrick Lalime is expected to get the start in net tonight. Prior to this game, Ryan Miller had started 12 straight games.

These two teams have only met once so far this season, with three more to go. Buffalo won that meeting 5-1, scoring all their goals in the third period. The Sabres are just 2-5-1 in its last eight games.

Carolina took a 1-0 lead when Aaron Ward scored his first goal of the season. After being outshot 8-4, Buffalo got on the board towards the end of the first. Andrej Sekera took a shot from the point that was deflected by Jochen Hecht to tie the game at one.

Buffalo put on the pressure in the second period, outshooting Carolina 18-9, but neither team could score a goal. Early in the third period, the Hurricanes regained their one goal lead again.
