It’s quiet. Too quiet. From the looks of things, and lack of sound bites emanating from Legends Field in Tampa, it seems like the Yankees are having a very calm and uneventful spring training thus far.

After an A-rod-less first month of the season, the New York Yankees have battled their way to the top of the AL East standings with a little over two months left of baseball to play.
Since the All Star break two weeks ago, the Bronx Bombers are 10-2 putting them not only in first amongst AL East teams, but they now own the second best record in the Majors sitting only one game behind the National League's Los Angeles Dodgers (62-38).
Who would have thought the Yankees would be in first considering their 0-8 record with the Boston Red Sox? Seems as if the Red Sox had the Yankees number this season, but it's the way in which the Yankees play against other Major League teams that shows their true potential.
With an inconsistent CC Sabathia and Andy Pettitte taking the hill for the Yankees, the final months of the 2009 season will be interesting to watch down the stretch. After hearing news that pitcher Chien-Ming Wang is declared out for the rest of the season due to arthroscopic surgery on his injured right shoulder, right hander Sergio Mitre will take over the role as the 5th starter who in two starts this season is (1-0) with 5 strikeouts.
The Yankees meet their rival Red Sox August 6-9 in a four game set at Yankee Stadium. At this point of the season, every game becomes critical especially in the always difficult AL East.

The Rangers Ballpark in Arlington (or whatever it is called now, really who can keep track anymore) hasn't been particularly kind to the New York Yankees in recent years. Actually if you want to take it a step further, the state of Texas hasn't exactly been the bearer of good news for the Yankee franchise either.

Whether you find this stupid or not, I was hesitant to write this blog entry now, since the last time I posted anything was at the start of the Yankees current 7 game win streak. Sure I may be a little too superstitious, but as Crash Davis said in Bull Durham "don't mess with a winning streak". Unfortunately for me, once the winning streak eventually ends, my payoff isn't as enticing as Nuke Laloosh's.

I'll get to this weeks Yankee news and notes once the Toronto series actually begins, but first I want to address an issue that seemed to garner a lot of attention this weekend. In fact if my memory serves me correct, I have talked about the whole Joba fist pump controversy once before, however I'm going to expand on that a bit more now. Seriously when did baseball players and the media that covers it become so damn sensitive? Apparently there is an unwritten rule in baseball that states if a player shows any type of emotion he must be punished via a 90+ mph fastball to his unprotected back or a pitcher must be mocked and ridiculed until he apologizes. Yet in all other sports, acts of emotion are celebrated or considered the norm.
