What’s wrong with the Tigers?

Sparky Anderson, Hall of Fame Manager, from the famed “Big Red Machine” Cincinnati Reds and 1984 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers often said that you can’t judge a team until they have played 40 games.  We, the Tigers, have limped to the 40 game mark and in fact have played 41 games after yesterday’s dreadful loss to the Kansas City Royals.   Well Sparky what can we say about this version of the Detroit Tigers.  Pathetic comes to mind! Overrated? Overpaid? Old?  There are only so many adjectives that one can come up with.  To say this season has been disasterous is an understatement.  After 41 games 16-25 they are currently on a four game losing streak and are 0-6 against division rival KC Royals.  When asked about the inconsistancy, Tigers Manager Jim Leyland says …”I can’t say I’m disappointed with the effort, but I’m very surprised and very disappointed with the results.”  He goes onto say that the offense is really his main concern.   The Tigers only scored 6 runs in a three game series against the Royals.  They have only three homeruns in the last 8 games.  All three have been hit by Rookie Matt Joyce.  “We’re having some (bad) at-bats. Too many giveaway at-bats. That’s what this is all about.”   Leyland goes on to say “That’s all I can tell you. I’m puzzled by it. The inconsistency of the offense puzzles me.”

The fact remains this is a good ball club playing very poorly.  This team isn’t old.  Players like Guillen, Ordonez, Pudge and Polanco have had bad stretches and good stretches.  Ordonez is still hitting at an all-star level.  Polanco started the season on a terrible slump but has turned it around.  Guillen has had to deal with two positions changes and attempting for the first time in his career to take at-bats as a DH.  Gary Sheffield on the other hand is at a cross-roads in his career.  Sheffield has become the whipping boy of the local Detroit media, talk shows and fans.   Fan message boards are calling for a buy out or trade.   Sheffield is definately hurting the club but he is not the sole reason for this downfall.   Last season Sheffield was hitting at an MVP clip.  From June to August of last season he was clearly the motor that got the Tigers offense going.  But his shoulders are hurting, he can’t play the field anymore and a possible DL stint is in his future.  This is wear GM Dave Dumbrowski and Jim Leyland need to step up and sit Sheffield down.  Sheffield has a lot of pride and will not take himself out of the lineup.  He needs to get himself healthy, he needs to be sent to his Tampa Bay home and told to relax and rehab his shoulder and come back strong for the dog days of summer and the race to the pennent.

Being a fan of this team can be very frustrating but lets be clear, Dumbrowski isn’t going to blow it up and start trading veterans.   Lets face it, the Tigers offensive struggles are about players wilting so far under the weight of expectations - pressing - slumping - not getting it done collectively.   Its not because their old, or overpayed.  This team will come around and it needs to start this weekend.  It’s not going to be easy with the NL west leading Arizona Diamondbacks on deck but it can be done.  For a team 41 games into a season playing 9 games under .500 they are only 6 games out of first place.  Thankfully for the Tigers no one has taken off.  The Indians are playing well and coming around but the Tigers aren’t done!  Sorry Sparky but I will give the Tigers another 40 games before I jump ship.

New Lineup Same Problems

While there are still alot of questions surrounding the Tigers, I think within one week we answered one: What team seems most likely to win the A.L. East?   After sweeping the Yankees one week ago, and feeling like the bats may have gotten untracked, the Tigers are 1-6. In 5 of those losses, the Tigers scored 1, 1, 3, 0, 1 runs. The other loss was the Sunday game in Minnasota where they had one brilliant inning - the 1st, in which they scored 6 runs - then went silent.    They cut Jacque Jones, moved Sheffield into LF and swapped him with Guillen in the line-up.   Matt Joyce was called up, and in 3 games Joyce has gone 3-for-11 with 1 BB and 1 RBI. In his last 6 games, Cabrera is 3-for 23 with 3 BB and no RBI’s, its real simple as to why the Tigers are struggling.

The Tigers have had injury problems, have played musical chairs with their defense, and have had a bullpen full of names like Dolsi, Lopez, Beltran, Cruceta, Rapada - and newcomer Bautista, who joined the bullpen’s DL list.   In return, Detroit has faced some pretty decent RH’ed pitching: Meche, Bannister, Grienke, Vasquez, Floyd (twice), Matsuzaka (twice), Wakefield (twice), Beckett, Carmona, McGowan, A.J. Burnett, L. Hernandez, Ervin Santana, Weaver, and LH’ers Sabathia, Buehrle, and Pettitte. The bullpen pitchers they’ve seen like F-Rod, Nathan, Soria, Betancourt, Paplebon, Okajima, Jenks, and so on, have all feasted on the Tiger’s RH’ed struggling hitters.   But the hitters were to carry this Tiger’s team. They haven’t. They’ve had their moments. But that’s the operative word - moments. The Tigers swept Texas, Minnesota (2 games), and New York. But in turn they’ve been swept by Kansas City, Chicago, and Minnesota (in a payback). The Tigers started the season 0-6. They’ve floundered on deck ever since, playing .500 and are now 15-21.

Their starting pitching is better than it was the first few weeks. And they are starting to settle in as a team a bit. But they are still in last place.   The Tigers are getting beat by 2-run HR’s on the pitching side of things (Boston hit 9 in the Monday-Thursday 4-game series, while the Tiger’s last HR was Granderson’s lead-off HR on Sunday in that 6-run 1st). And when the hitters are snoozing like they have been, those HR’s seem like tall mountains to climb. Their only win this week was a dramatic come-from-4-runs-ahead-twice-then-behind-in-the-9th wild 10-9 game.

The good news on this May Friday in Detroit? The Tigers are nearing the end of their tough start out of the gate. Remember? After the Opener, the Tigers had to play 38 games in 40 days, much of them vs. the likes of all the A.L.’s best. And the shape the Tigers have been in, with the way they’ve been playing, was a way worse combination than I had ever anticipated.

What’s next? The Yankees. With two LH’ers on the mound. FOX on Saturday. This is a little chance to right the ship. Then, after an off day for travel, they have one more final leg of the opening stretch of schedule - they head to Kansas City and then Arizona.   Tonight and this weekend would be the time to start bailing the water out of the boat. The Yankees want revenge. The Tigers want amends. It’s May 16th, Tigers. Time to rise and shine.

Leyland “Changes Coming”

categorycategory

The frustration in Detroit has reached a boiling point.  Manager Jim Leyland said after the Tigers blew a 6 run lead to the Minnasota Twins that changes were coming.  The sloppy play of the second highest payroll in baseball has to stop.  Leyland true to his word has cut left fielder Jacque Jones.   Jones has played in 24 games and was batting .165 with 1 homerun and 5 RBI’s.  His defense in left field was also suspect and was often replaced in late innings with Toledo farm hand Ryan Raburn.   The Tigers called up Matt Joyce from the Mud Hens who is probably Toledo’s hottest hitter.  He was hitting .299 with 5 homeruns and 21 RBI’s in 28 games.  Joyce was a 12th-round draft pick in 2005.

Jim Leyland not stopping there also announced that Carlos Guillen and struggling DH Gary Sheffield will be switching places in the batting order.  Sheffield who has been struggling with pain in both shoulders is hitting .189 with 2 homeruns and 5 RBI’s.  Sheffield will be moving down to the 6th spot in the order and Guillen will be moved to the 3rd spot.  You could tell Leyland wasn’t happy with the awful performance against the Twins losing three straight after sweeping the New York Yankees in the Bronx for the first time since 1966.  On sunday the Tigers scored 6 runs in the top of the first inning.  They scored 2 runs in the other 26 innings of the series.

The Tigers open an important home stand to hopefully stop the bleeding and get this season on the right track.  Starting monday is a four game series against the East leading Boston Red Sox’s, then three games with the Yankees and three games with the Mariners.  Tonight will be the beginning of the new line up and only time will tell.

Tonights probable starting lineup for the Tigers

Granderson CF

Polanco 2B

Guillen 3B

Ordanez DH

Cabrera 1B

Sheffield LF

Joyce RF

Renteria SS

Rodriguez C

In other news the Detroit Tigers put Denny Bautista on the 15 day DL with shoulder tendinitis.  Dontrelle Willis pitched well in his first rehab assignment but suffered a set back when he re-injured his knee in the second start and the Tigers cancelled his rehab and recalled him to the big club.   Reports say that Willis will throw bullpen sessions to determine where they go from here.
