Jersey Jay: Devils Split Home & Home

The Devils scored more goals last night against the Capitals then they did in their previous 4 games if you count the shootout winner by Zach Parise.  So have they finally found their scoring touch?

Friday nights performance was another solid effort with only 1 goal to show for it as Jose Theodore stymied the Devils offense yet again with timely saves including a highlight reel save against Zach Parise with the paddle of his stick, and the Capitals went on to win 3-1 with Ovechkin icing the game with an empty net goal.

Saturday night New Jersey showed some poise and resiliency and some GOALS!!! SOME GOALS I tell you!! with a back and forth seesaw battle where the game was either tied or the Devils were leading all game. The Devils could have really ran away with the game in the first but Theodore had some more stellar saves again and some miscues by the Devils forwards including a yawning cage miss by Elias who ended up with 2 goals at the end of the night. When Ovechkin tied the game with 1 second left in regulation nobody in the State of New Jersey would have blamed the Devils for folding their tents and going home with the luck they have been having of late, but they stayed tough throughout the overtime and Zach Parise fooled everyone including the announcers with his unbelievable shootout goal where everyone thought he was going to his patented back hand move but faked and put it back to his forehand.

Clemmenson who had his second straight start thanks to his solid play on Friday night struggled and let 3 goals in that he would have liked to have had back, but in the end he posted his first win as a Devils starter this season. He had a gorgeous poke check on Boyd Gordon on the Caps final shootout shot. Zajac had a 3 point night, Elias had 2 goals, Gionta finally scored, Clarkson and Langenbrunner rounded out the scoring.

When you lose your franchise goalie you expect your team to pick it up offensively and either to win games like this or lose them, on this night the Devils outlasted the very potent Capitals attack for a much needed well deserved win. The Devils have been working very hard since the loss of Brodeur and have had nothing to show for it until last night. A great win by the Devils! Next up Florida Panthers on Thursday night at the Rock.
