Wanted man Kiffin interviews at Clemson

In his first interview for a coaching position since the dog and pony show know as the Raiders let him know in the most entertaining way humanly possible Lane Kiffin interviewd with Clemson officals last week.

This may mean nothing other then just a feeling out process since Clemson officals also just talked to Oklahoma defensive coordinator Brent Venables yesterday.  Kiffin will have his choice of schools to go to and it will be interesting what happens.

In the article is says Tennessee has also had contact with him as I am sure Washington shouldn’t be to far behind in at least talking to his representatives.  Washington in all eyes would be the worst job to take over being that are just that terrible of a team.

Out of the 3 jobs that have his name mentioned where is the best fit for him ?

Personally I think it will come down to Clemson or Tennessee.

If he wants another shot in the NFL I think he should holdout and wait for a NFL job. I think if you make that step back you are done and become a college coach for life

To be honest Sandy, I don’t think he is NFL type coaching material. I always thought he was bet fit to coach in college. It’s better he learn that now then bounce back and forth like say Saban.

I’m wondering how good of a situation Tennessee is these days.. It’s such a high-profile job with such a crappy team. I’m not sure if Lane’s the guy to turn the program around. He may be better off at Clemson.

I am not so sure it’s a crappy team or just a team who stopped listening to Fulmer. It would not be the first time a team quit on a coach (if that is what happend)

This is according to rivals.com where Tennessee finished in the last 4 years at least with recruiting. 2 very good ones with 2 not great but not bad ones either. So the problem to me was not the talent.

    2005 they finished 4th
    2006 they finished 23rd
    2007 they finished 3rd
    2008 they finished 35th

Right now for 2009 they sit with a class ranked 11th as of 11/12/08. Keep in mind the 2009 class is not final till they offically sign Feb 4th, 2009.

Whether or not they bought into Fulmer’s system this year, doesn’t change the fact that they haven’t won the big conference games in a long time. When was their last SEC title?? 1998??!!

Vol fans will consider Kiffin as a potential savior, considering his success at USC. I don’t know if he’s up for it just yet.

I am not saying he is but anybody to takes that high profile job will be considered a savior even if they are not.

To me i think it’s either clemson or the vols, i dont see him wanting to go to washington. But i’ve been wrong many times before.

I think he could do a good job in the NFL but needs the right spot. He had zero chance to survive in Oakland and to be honest I really don’t think he did a half bad job. Heck look how brutal they have been since he left.

If he does go back to college football I would say out of the teams you mentioned above Tennessee would be the best fit. I agree with everything you said.

True with the right NFL team he could very well have a good go at it. But not with any of the jobs we know that will be open once the season in the NFL ends………Maybe Cleveland if they make a change but that has to happen first.

    Quick question…

Would you wait and see if Charlie Weis gets fired and try and bring Notre Dame back to glory?

It may depend on what kind of offers he gets from Clemson, Tennessee, or Washington. It could also depend on where he wants to put his family. With at least Tennessee and Clemson he wouldn’t be to far from his father in Tampa.

For sure. But man it would be fun to try and be the guy to bring the Irish back to glory. As a football guy I can’t think of a better spot to try and win.

So do you think Weis is out?

No he is staying, his first 2 years there weren’t even his players. His first year he was winning the super bowl and hardly recruiting. He is just starting to get his classes in there and playing.

I do think he is probably better off just calling the plays himself though.

Notre Dame making a change this fast again would set them back again.

I think for Kiffin I would reccomend going to Clemson. The ACC has a much easier road to success and BCS bowls then Kiffin would have in the SEC.

With Tennessee the expectations would obviously be huge, and at best he would be the third or fourth best coach in just the SEC’s East Division.

And no way ND can afford to fire Weis. He has a huge contract. All of these schools need to realize the value of continuity.

Right on Nich, I still give Tennessee just as much a shot as Clemson just because it’s the SEC and that type of challenge maybe something he really wants to take on.

In the ACC he would probably be able to have more instant success, in either case with his ability to recruit I would think in no time he’d have the type of athletes to bring either program to center stage.
