Is this the end of Kerry Wood? I sure hope not.

This move kind of puzzles me for the cubs. Unless he is possibly going to be used as a chip in the attempt to land Peavy.

I can’t say I love it. Marmol to me would be the closer if Wood is not brought back. Perhaps you are right on the chip to land Peavy…or maybe they sign Wood and bring in Gregg to be the setup guy and move Marmol who you would think would get a better return??

I just thought that maybe Marmol is who they move with some other prospects to better their chances.
But on the other hand as we saw with the Mets it might be a good insurance policy to have a 2nd guy in their with closer experience then just going with a committee type approach.

Sad to see Kerry go if he finds a big deal from someone else. If any of you recall one of my favorite memories of this summer was getting to watch Wood pitch live for the first time.

This deal hurts the Cubs in two ways:
a) Marmol now goes from a position where he can get 6 outs a night to the closer role, where he may be held back for “save only” situations.
b) also while I think Gregg can do a decent job in middle reliever (although Flordia is easier to pitch in than Wrigley), they gave up a player in Ceda who very well might out perform him next year.
Clearly I’m not a huge fan of this deal for the Cubs.
