This is quite a surprise. Again, this is not finalized yet but if this trade happens, the NL MVP from last year is on his way to Oakland. For more on this story click on the link below.

Thank you Oakland. Happy to see Gonzalez and Street leaving the AL West if in fact Street is the other player in the deal.

I’m huge A’s fan, and I’m not exactly sure what to think of this trade.
For starters, there are conflicting reports about who’s going the other way.
If we believe what Yahoo Sports are reporting, the package is Outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, starting pitcher Greg Smith and closer Huston Street. I really like that deal, we avoid giving up any of our stud prospects (although you could argue Gonzalez is a very good prospect) and bring in a hitter like Holliday.
That being said, I think the A’s will move him for a package of prospects. The young core of this team is still a couple years away, and they have essentially turned spare parts like Street and Smith into a really good bargaining chip.
It will be interesting to see what Beane can get for Holliday, and I expect they will also move Crosby in the near future.

There was no real purpose for the A’s to keep Street, his position in the bullpen has been taken by Brad Ziegler and Joey Devine. I really liked Street, but this is definitely dealing from a position of strength.
I was also pretty high on Gonzalez, but the A’s are loaded with talented young outfielders. It was obvious someone needed to go, and I guess they decided Gonzalez was the choice. I think the A’s are still in a solid position though for the future, with promising young outfielders like Ryan Sweeney, Aaron Cunningham, and Travis Buck.

I see this as a win-win for Oakland, and the only way this can come back to hurt Beane is if Gonzalez develops into an elite player, which is a long ways away after he posted a .273 OBP last season. Also this is the 2nd time he’s been traded after being labeled an elite prospect, and it makes you wonder if his coaches feel the holes in his game are beyond repair. Kind of reminds me of Andy Marte in away.
Then again he did just get traded for one of the best hitters in baseball, so thats no knock on Gonzalez either. As for the other two, Smith is a decent lefty who at best will hold down a back of the rotation spot in Colorado, but who was expendable in Oakland with Simmons, Cahill and Anderson on the horizon.
For Oakland, they finally get a big bat that they haven’t had since Tejada, and it appears that they will make a run at the Angles who could lose Teixeria and K-Rod, which should mean they’ll play closer to their expected win total of 2008 (about 88 wins according to the pythagorean standings) instead of 100. If the A’s can land another bat in Giambi or Furcal, they could go from 75 wins to mid 80s, which definitely puts them in contention.
At worst they stink again, sell a few extra tickets thanks to Holliday, and Beane either flips him at the deadline to a desperate team or gets two first round picks in the 2010 draft.

Left out Street…as you said Brandon his days were numbered, and I even expect Colorado to flip him to someone else.
