WEC 36 Tonight

When you talk about the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world certain names instantly spring to mind. These usually include Fedor, Anderson Silva, BJ Penn and Georges St-Pierre (in no particular order). One name that many fans aren’t familiar with in Urijah Faber. If you are one of those people scratching your head right now then you have got to make sure to tune into WEC 36 tonight when Faber defends his title against Mike Brown. If you do know who this kid is then you are obviously already tuning in and don’t need me to tell you to do so.Â
This kid is the real deal and always puts on very exciting fights. His last fight back in March was a five round war against none other than former UFC lightweight champion Jens Pulver. Faber didn’t lose a round in the fight and the only reason it went five rounds is the toughness of Pulver.Â
The card shapes up like this:
WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah ” The California Kid” Faber vs. Mike Brown
WEC Middleweight Champion Paulo Filho vs. Chael Sonnen
Jens ” Little Evil” Pulver vs. Leonard Garcia
Jake Rosholt vs. Nissen Osterneck
“Razor” Rob McCullough vs. Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone
Jose Aldo vs. Jonathan Brookins
Carmelo Marrero vs. Steve Steinbeiss
Rafael Dias vs. Danny Castillo
Rani Yahya vs. Yoshiro Maeda
Though you may notice that another WEC champion is on the card, he will not be defending his title tonight. This is due to the fact that he came in 7 pounds over the limit. This is also known as ‘not even close’. On his second attempt Filho was only 4 pounds over, but in title fights the fighters must respect the weight limit exactly. Too bad for his opponent Chael Sonnen who lost to Filho in their first fight, though there was controversy surrounding the decision. Filho was able to lock an armbar on Sonnen late in the round and though Sonnen never tapped, the referee stopped the fight anyways as Sonnen was visibly yelling. Some say he was verbally tapping, though he claims he was yelling at the ref not to stop the fight.
It should be interesting to see how this goes down tonight as well. Especially considering what Matt Lindland had to say about this match:
“Filho’s cornerman told us that they would walk across the cage and hand Chael the belt if he wins. When Chael whoops his ass, I expect them to live up to their word.” (mmaweekly.com)
Needless to say, I’m pretty excited for this one. I know I say this often, but don’t miss this card. It should be a great one and the price is right.Â
Enjoy the action.
