Stamps West Camps

The Calgary Stampeders clinch the west tonight with a 28-17 beating of the Ticats in Hamilton. Burris throws two more touchdowns tonight, making it 38 on the year. The Stamps’ defense pretty much held the Ticats offense in check the whole night, forcing 5 turnovers. Burris did throw 2 interceptions in the evening; he really was not that sharp.

The Stamps open the scoring from a blocked field goal as Hughes blocks the try and runs it down and recovers the fumble. But the offense was flat early and they were held to a field goal. There were some concerns in tonight’s game as the Stamps offense was really flat throughout the first quarter. In fact, Burris threw an interception to Knowlton who ran all the way down the field almost into the red zone. But the Ticats blew their chance when Porter fumbled the ball right back, with Labinjo picking up the field goal. The Stamps take the Ticats’ gift. They take a 10 play drive and ram it down the Ticats’ throat, ending with a Reynolds 1 yard rush touchdown.

The Ticats had their chances in the first quarter, but they did not take advantage of a sloppy Stamps offense. When you don’t hold a tiger down early, you will pay for it, and the Ticats did. Burris throws a late touchdown to Reynolds to end the half 17-3.

The third quarter started out with a Burris touchdown pass to Copeland to make it 24-4. After that things seem to slow down, it all started when Reynolds drops a easy touchdown pass and the Stamps settle for a field goal 27-4.

The fourth quarter started when the Ticats were moving and made an awful call on a third down run play with Keith, who got smacked in the backfield by Hughes. The main reason I had a problem with the call was that it started out 5 yards deep in the backfield, and that is where it ended. Porter directs a very nice drive, which ends with a nice pass play from Porter to Davis, who made a great cut in the end zone. Tafralis came in looking very good, but with the score, the Stamps probably really let up. Tafralis threw the last touchdown to Rodriguez to end the scoring.

I have a few concerns. It seemed to me that the Stamps were lulled to sleep by the Ticats and were very average in the second half. In fact, I dare say if the Ticats took advantage of the lackluster Stamps’ offense in the first quarter, this game might have been a different story. Despite the Stamps being in the first place in the west, they are going to have to improve their play in order to advance to the Grey Cup. Ginal score 28-17.
