Between the years of 1997-2001 and 2006-08 Todd Jones has been closing games for Detroit Tigers.  Along the way he has a world series appearance in 06, set the Tigers franchise record for saves and recorded 319 career saves, 14th on Major League Baseball’s all-time list, and has pitched in the Majors for 16 seasons.

Nicknamed “The Rollercoaster” by hall of fame broadcast legend Ernie Harwell announced his retirement today in his weekly column for the Sporting News.   “So this is it,” Jones wrote. “If you’re a Tigers fan, I’ll never stress you out again. If you’re not a Tigers fan, you’ll never have me as your ace in the hole, convinced I’ll blow a lead against your team.”   Todd Jones was a managers dream.  He came into ninth inning situations throwing strikes and getting outs.  If you beat him, he tipped his cap and was accountable.   He was well liked throughout baseball and especially his teammates.

Jones, has been on the DL for most of the 2008 season after experiencing shoulder stiffness.  This has prompted his retirement announcement as well as the fact that he just turned 40.  In addition to playing for the Tigers, Jones pitched for Astros, Twins, Rockies, Red Sox, Reds, Phillies and Marlins.
