Midweek in the Midwest

Here we are, hump day yet only a day and half removed from the Packers 2008 season opening win vs. Minnesota.  Gotta love it, its a short week with the Packers taking on Detroit this Sunday, at Detroit.

This is one of two games Green Bay plays Detroit, another NFC north division opponent.  The second of this two game set will be back across Lake Michigan shortly after Christmas on December 28th, where both teams play out their regular seasons - imagine the difference three months from now will make for both franchise’s eh?  The Lions opened their season up with a loss on the road to suprising Atlanta.  In that game, they lost for the year, TE Dan Campbell.  You can bet, the Packers will be facing a squad looking to give the Ford Field home crowd the team’s first 2008 win and avenge last weeks loss.

Checking out the health impact of the roster as we sneak towards this weekend, the Packers biggest concern may be Ryan Grant’s hamstring and their biggest progression would be the return to practice of Center Scott Wells, Gaurd Josh Sitton, and Reciever James Jones.  Grant’s hamstring may mean more Brandon Jackson and possibly field action for 3rd string RB Kregg Lumpkin who saw dressed, but had no action vs. the Vikes.   It remains to be seen if both Wells and Jones who missed the opener will play at Detroit.

The team roster did escape major injury (unlike those Patriots eh?), but did see CB Woodson, Safety Bigby and WR Ruvell Martin all finish the Minnesota game with a few minor, non-concerning bumps n’ bruises.  Only Justin Harrell, remains on the PUP list at present.

In other, related Packers news, former punter and fellow Canadian Jon Ryan was snapped up only a week out of work by the Seattle Seahawks.  Ryan and his new ‘mates will welcome Green Bay to Seattle for a matchup in Week 6 on Sunday, Oct 12th.

Finally, an offbeat piece here.  A big, local discussion gaining steam now that the Packers season has started is the topic of ‘party houses’ around Lambeau Field.  Given Green Bay’s city population is posted at about 102,000, you can imagine if you’ve never been here, that the stadium district is mainly comprised of residential neighbourhoods.  Well, a few real estate entrepeneur’s have began to buy places close to the stadium, renovate them into Packer game day haunts and profit.  No city laws have ever deemed this as illegal - but now as families start to see the area shifting on game week/weekends, the debate is heating up.  I want to hear from any of you out their see this in any of your areas or if this is unqiue to the Packers terriroty.  You can get a better perspecitve, with pictures here.

I think the whole gameday experience by having the homes set up the way they are is very cool! It adds to the exp.
