Martz’s Farts Lay an Egg On Opening Day

There’s nothing positive to write about J.T. O’Sullivan’s opening act against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 1. He couldn’t establish rhythm, he was afraid to attempt the big play and he and his fellow scrubs turned the ball over six times, while Kurt Warner and Friends didn’t turn it over at all.
It’s been clear from the get-go that this team only goes as far as the quarterback will take them and if this is the kind of play we’re to expect, then I advise fans, who wish to maintain their sanity, to jump off the ship before it sinks. This offense (aside from Frank Gore who broke one early in the first quarter) stinks and Mike Martz is too stubborn to realize it. They are not talented or intelligent enough to run the kind of offense that he wants and instead of simplifying things to suit them, he insists on trying things that just don’t work.
If they want to do anything offensively this year, they may as well just hand it off to Gore on every single play! He’s their backbone and their only player who might be Pro Bowl bound this year.
You know what though? At least they’re not in the same boat as New England!!

This is all I will be writing about Martz’s Farts this week. They play next Sunday at Seattle (a team that will likely be very angry after getting smacked around by the new beasts of the AFC East - the Buffalo/Toronto Bills).
The rest of my time will be dedicated to the USC/Ohio St. matchup. At last check, the Trojans are 10.5-point favorites — this despite the fact that Beanie Wells insists that he will be good to go. Let’s get it on!!

Early line is USC is a 10 point favorite.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:42 am
It’s already gone up to 10.5. Do you think that’s a reflection on whether or not Beanie will go or is it because OSU almost lost to a MAC team?
September 8th, 2008 at 6:49 am
I lost both my starting quarterbacks in one day. OUCH! Brady and Young. That just about kills me for the season.

Hasselbeck’s on the block for the right price Jamie! Offer something up.
September 8th, 2008 at 6:57 am
I think it is part of it & think it partly because they struggled against Ohio.
Beanie clearly means much more to Ohio St when he is not in the lineup then if any of the USC backs went down.

The most points I got were from jacksonville’s defense. even with 2 players going tonight I am still down 50 points.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:02 am
Totally agree with that. With Wells in the lineup, the USC d will stack the box and take him out of the game. Without him, whoever plays at QB for OSU will see a lot of linebackers coming after him!!!
September 8th, 2008 at 7:09 am
LOL! I’ll have to take a pass on that one.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:14 am
His numbers will improve when the receivers are healthy.

Great teams dont get caught looking ahead to their next opponent as bad as OSU did. Good teams get caught looking ahead, so I will say OSU is a good team, but far from great this year. Just my 2 cents.

True Kevin, but they were still able to turn it around in the 4th. I don’t see this OSU team as being any different than the teams from last year and the year before that got hammered in the title game. They can coast against inferior opponents, but look like Mid-Major teams against the big boys.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:38 am
I think they will show many different looks. Knowing the best WR they have is robiskie (sp?) they can roll coverage his way and stack the box and force OSU into an entirely different game they either don’t want to play or aren’t very confident in. It is still early but now that we are in the week leading to the game it could be something USC looks to do.
I am still very interested to see how OSU handles the speed USC has, its been scene in the last 2 BCS title games when OSU goes up against teams with seriously sick levels of team and overall speed they struggle. They don’t normally see that from Big 10 teams which are more of a smash mouth type of teams.
Even with the only regular season loss they had last year against Illionis speed hurt OSU and they lost.

I expect USC to have a lot of guys moving in a lot of directions on offense. We will see McKnight lining up in every possible spot on the field and Turner will be running quite a bit. OSU’s only realistic chance on defense is by dominating the line of scrimmage.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:50 am
You could be right there. I hate to say it because OSU does have some very good players and a good team. I just can’t see them beating USC and rolling out the same depth USC has and keep the high level of consistency going.
I do want to see a bit more from the tight end on USC.
September 8th, 2008 at 7:57 am
I don’t. As good as Fred Davis was for the Trojans, their offense wasn’t nearly as successful as it was when the focal point of the passing game was the wide receivers. I like Anthony McCoy, but I’ll be a happier camper if he’s used the same way Dominique Byrd was during their title years — as a third option who can make big, downfield plays.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:06 am
I am not saying I want them to be the focal point just see some more out of them. As like you said how they used Byrd.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:08 am
Not sure if he’s athletic enough to pull that off…Byrd had some jets for a tight end.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:12 am
With the weapons the have they just need the tight end to find the gaps in the defense and be a safety for Sanchez if he can’t find any of his initial targets.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:14 am
Fair enough. I’m sure Sarkisian has something good drawn up.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:32 am
I would think so. How much of a look will Sarkisian get soon to be a head coach ?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:38 am
I’m not sure. Norm Chow couldn’t get a head coaching job and Sarkisian hasn’t had nearly the same success on offense as Chow did. If he makes Sanchez an instant star, there will be quite a few teams looking his way…
September 8th, 2008 at 8:40 am
Is there something people have against giving Chow his shot ?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:50 am
He got the call at Tennessee to be the OC there and after the Titan offense was no better than mediocre, he immediately got reviewed as a guy who can’t translate success from the NCAA to the NFL. I don’t think he wants to coach a mid-major. If he can turn UCLA around, then maybe he’ll get another chance.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:06 am
I see Chow as a college coach and took the job in the NFL in a effort to try and make it happen. That didn’t and he is back in the part of the game he belongs.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:09 am
He said that his goal was to be a head coach of a major, college program. Maybe he’s thinking of replacing one of the dinosaurs (like FSU’s coach, for example).
