Hawk Talk- Week 1 Recap
September 7, 2008 by Terry Shilton
They say a picture is worth a thousand words, for Hawks fans this picture is worth a few four letter words. Roscoe Parrish and the Bills special teams blew the doors off! a 63 yard punt return touchdow, a 4th down fake field goal touchdown, and a Josh Wilson fumble, recovered on a kickoff return leading to a touchdown throw by Trent Edwards.
Reviewing the Hawks Keys To Victory
from my preview
OFFENSE
1. The Hawks will have run the ball effectively: We only rushed 21 times for almost 100 yards I would have liked to see 30 plus carries from the backfield, but overall B plus night
2. Protect the Ball: two turnovers plus special teams were really the difference makers.
3. Receivers: had to step and get involved to make up for injuries, Courtney Taylor had 3 drops, as did Jeb Putzier, Jordan Kent looked like practice roster material, the only bright spot was John Carlson who for a rookie had a decent showing.
DEFENSE
1. Stop the Run, Marshawn averaged 4.2 yards a touch against our D that was supposed to be focused on stopping him, he only needed 16 carries to get 76 yards and rested the 4th quarter
2. Pressure Trent Edwards, the one sack was the only time Trent Edwards was ever really pressured and it was the result of a great solo effort by Patrick Kerney, no team effort no pressure.
Revised Key Matchups
Matt Hasselback vs The Bills Secondary, I actually mentioned this as a key matchup as part of my preview, saying “Hawks win it Matt goes over 250 passing yards with completions to 5 different recievers.” The drops didn’t help, nor did the bad back but to complete just 41% of your passes is not good enough, I found myself wanting to see what Seneca Wallace might be able to do. Terrence Mcgee looked better than I have ever seen him, deflecting 3 passes and intercepting another. This is not the same defense that finished 30th against the pass last year.
Lee Evans vs. Kelly Jennings, Coach Holmgren went public in camp saying there would be open competition for the role as the teams Corner opposite Marcus Trufant. But Kelly won the role back, one has to wonder how? He got burned deep by Lee Evans one on one three seperate times, two for big receptions the third incomplet as he was slightly under thrown by Evans. Also in a zone coverage he let Tight End Robert Royal beat him with a very soft slant route for a Touchdown.
Ryan Plackemeier vs Himself, Ryan was nothing short of awful, three terrible punts handed the Bills a short field and he missed a key tackle on Parrish that cost the Hawks a punt return Touchdown. He just has to be more consistent than that, big plays like opposing teams returning punts are going to happen but an NFL punter, punting three times short of thirty yards shanking punts out of bounds before any return should and can not!
The Short and Long of It
In my preview I said “In short this game is won on third downs, Third down conversion percentage will be the key stat which ever team wins there, wins Sunday” Key Sat according to nfl.com’s game center for this game:
Key stat
The Bills were strongest when it counted. The Seahawks converted only 3 of 16 third-down opportunities (18.8 percent).
In the end the Bills executed my game plan for the Hawks, on offense the ran the ball effectively were able to set up play action and their receivers were able to exploit one on one match ups with our corners especially on Kelly Jennings. On Defense they pressured Matt Hasselback creating 5 sacks, countless hurries and several knockdowns but the real knockout blow came from the Bills special teams, on the inaugaral NFL weekly radio show for www.sportstalkbuzz.com we discussed the Bills Special teams, who knew just how special they would be…

Just a quick note I will update the status of both Maurice Morris and Nate Burleson who suffered injuries in this game, I’ll post the updates in the comment section.

Sorry so late on the response, but I’ve had a busy day. I love the breakdown, and I think you hit the nail on the head in every department. I think the one thing missing is that Seattle were simply decimated with injuries, many at the same position, which can really hurt a team. The loss of Burleson is just salt in the wounds. I like your team, and still expect them to win their division. What do you think?

I like them too but as for winning the division this next game will prove alot to me in that department. Two biggest concerns are the reciever play can we get two consistent recievers if we can we make it, Deion Branch ought to be one, it’s the other I’m not sure about Engram is not back until week 6 or so and by then we could be in a real deep hole. The secondary also worries me Kelly Jennings was bad, against a much smaller reciever beat three times deep by Evans, once by Royal and watching the highlights this morning Jennings got washed out on the Marshawn lynch touchdown by a block from Lee Evans. Even though it was a hold, he has to be better than that and right now no one else is ready to step into that starting role.

Won’t Babineaux (sp?) be back next week? That should help a bit, but then again, he is only the nickel back. I agree that Evans could have been called on that one, but like you say, he has to be able to make that play regardless.

Josh Wilson almost won the job it was really a toss up will his experience help, I’d like to say it would Josh is a far better overall athlete and is maybe a bit too aggresive but it is certainly not a huge upgrade.

Tim those type of holds happen every play I don’t begrudge the “no call” and I could understand it if it was a reciever with the physical capabilities of a James Hardy but it wasn’t so to me he has to make a play, maybe not make the tackle but not get washed out totally.
