STAMPS HANG ON AND SALVAGE A WIN OVER THE ESKIES
The Calgary Stampeders walk in to Edmonton and finally play a full game, to beat the Eskies 38-33. It sure did not look like a Stamps victory in the beginning, as Shannon recovers a fumble from a bad snap and rambles for 25 yards for a touchdown for the Eskimos on the first offensive play for Calgary. It was a very inauspicious start for the Stamps, to say the least.
The Stampeders could have laid down and given up on that play. It was crucial for the Stampeders to respond, and respond they did. Burris throws passes to Johnston Lewis, and the touchdown pass to Thelwell. The drive was a 81 yards in seven plays. It was a monstrous response to their initial blunder, to tie the game at seven. The Stamps led 10-7 after the first quarter.
The second was really quite uneventful, except for a great return off a punt by Jackson for a 49 yard return. The Eskimos got a 19 yard field goal from Prefontaine after the punt return of Jackson. The Stamps defense actually had one of it best halves of the season, really controlling Ray and Eskimos’ offense. The half ended tied at 14. The score flattered the Eskimos.
The third quarter started from a bad pass by Ray, as James picks off and goes the distance to give the Stamps an early 21-14 lead. The Eskimos dominated the rest of the quarter as they had the ball nearly the whole third quarter. The problem was the Stamps never broke. They kept on bending, but never allowed a third quarter touchdown. The Eskimos got a turnover by Thelwell (who got injured on the play) as Thelwell coughed up the ball after a monster hit by Shabazz. Shabazz - I like that name. Think I will change my name , The Eskimos stalled but could not take advantage of the turnover and settled for a Prefontaine field goal again. The Eskies were gaining momentum going into the third quarter, despite trailing 21-20.
The offenses took over as they began to click in the fourth quarter. The Stamps take advantage of an fumble by Pederson, thanks to a huge hit by James. The Stamps promptly took the ball 46 yards for a touchdown, ending with a great catch by Copeland in the end zone for 8 yards.
The Eskimos responded with an excellent drive directed by Ray. He guided the Eskies down the field to paydirt. As he connected on five straight passes, two to Harris, one to Nowacki, Campbell, and Stamps. The drive concludes with a great 9 yard scamper by Ray, running out of trouble to the Endzone.
The Stamps get a field goal later in the fourth by Sandro as the drive stalls. The key play in the fourth quarter comes from a muff punt as Prefontaine fumbles and tramples all the way back to the Eskies’ 15. Which leads me to the play of the game on a catch by Rambo, who gets sandwiched between two Eskimo halfbacks and still manages to hang on to the ball and stay on his feet to walk into the end zone. The touchdown pass was for 27 yards. The lead was 38-26. The Eskimos march down the field late and get a late touchdown run by Bertrand of two yards; the score 38-33.
The next short kickoff play by review could have gone either way. I could not tell if Copeland touched the ball or not. If the refs would have called Edmonton’s ball it wouldn’t have been overruled either. Could I tell if it was a bad call? No, it could have been called either way. I could not fault the ref on the call. It was a judgment call. Too close to call, so I was not surprised it was not overruled. Final Stamps win 38-33.
STAMPS PLAY OF THE GAME
Mr. Copeland had a monstrous game, as he was practically the only receiver that Burris was throwing to in fourth quarter. The touchdown pass in the fourth was a great catch by Copeland.
ESKIMOS PLAYER OF THE GAME
Harris was simply outstanding. He was by far the best offensive weapon for the Eskimos. He ran all over the field and made some great catches down the stretch. This was easily the best game of the season for Harris.
