Giants Win, Show Plaxico The Money

The Giants opened the game up with a drive that showed just why they are the defending champs.  During the first series Plaxico Burress who just signed a new deal with the Giants caught everything Eli threw at him, proving himself worthy of every penny of the $35 million contract.  The Redskins didn’t seem to have an answer for the Giants offense, and after a Fred Smoot pass interference in the endzone, Eli was able to scramble in for a touchdown giving the Giants a lead they would never lose.

The Giants defense started off just as good as their offense.  Jason Campbell had little time to do anything as the boys in blue forced them into four straight punt situations.  The only first down that didn’t come off a penalty for the Redskins came at the end of the 2nd Quarter.  With the defense playing this well you couldn’t help but think that they probably have a chip on their shoulder.  People were questioning whether or not they would be as effective without the key losses to personnel, well I think they answered those questions tonight.  The defense held Campbell to just 133 yards passing, as well as keeping Clinton Portis to 84 yards rushing.  With neither of those players able to get anything going, the Giants relied on field position, a few Jon Carney FG’s and good clock management to keep and hold the lead the entire game.

At times it appeared the Redskins were going to make it interesting.  After a long kickoff return by Rock Cartwright, and a face masking penalty on the Giants, Campbell was able to connect with Santana Moss for a 12 yard touchdown pass.  This TD made the score 16-7 going into halftime.  Unfortunately both offenses came out in the second half and were unable to convert any of their drives into points.

The player of the game was Plaxico.  He dominated the Skins secondary, tying a career high 10 receptions and hauling in 133 yards.  This kind of effort kept the crowd pumped up the entire game.  Another shout out goes to Brandon Jacobs who stomped through the defense for 116 yards rushing.  He also taught safety LaRon Landry that “when the trains coming, you better get out of the way” as he ran him over to finish of a run in the 2nd quarter.  That’s the same quote I use in buffet lines.

As the Giants now get a long week to prepare for the up coming games they can savor this victory over a division rival but also have to work on a couple aspects of their game.  For one the special teams has got to do a better job on kickoffs.  Second, the offense has to be able to convert those long drives into six rather than three points or they will see leads like they had tonight evaporate against better offenses.

Impressive win by Giants. Looks like Jacobs, Plax, and Manning will all have big years. D looks strong…hope Mattias is alright after what happened on the last play of the game. Winning the The NFC East is going to be a war.

      Agreed Femi and Adam!

Great balance displayed by the Giants on offense. This team aint rolling over for anyone this year, regardless of the two big holes on the DL.

Jacobs looked like a beast out there, for such a big guy he sure does have some moves. The Giants D looked just as effective as last year, just goes to show how valuable Justin Tuck is.

Tuck will be a force for years. He was a stud at ND in college and he has progressed nicely!

I am not sure if the Giants looked really good, or if the Redskins just looked really bad.
There is no doubt that the Giants will compete this year, as they do have a good team. But the Redskins showed absolutely nothing to warrent anything on offense, and not much on D.
      Campbell was terrible!

I may have completely overrated the Skins

      Congrats on the win.

I have to say it! What a boring opener to the season. If the Redskins have any hope of making this into a season, they better bench Jason Campbell, as he is awful. Eli Manning didn’t look that much better IMO, his decision making is questionable and he should have been picked off 3 to 4 times.

The Giants defence however are looking quite strong again.

Mathius looked okay, walking off the field on his own was a good sign. It was the last thing N.Y fans wanted to see on the last play of the game.

Jamie, while I admit there was nothing going on in the second half, I was very entertained throughout the entire first half. I would not have called it a complete bust of an opener.

You said it Lee, while Eli should have been able to take a couple of those drives to the endzone, his counterpart Campbell looked like he was playing his first NFL game.

Campbell benefitted at Auburn from having Cadillac Williams and Ronnie Brown as his RB’s. How could you screw up with those two studs behind you!
