Favre Likely To Sit Out Preseason Closer

As my sainted grandmother used to say, “You don’t drive a Ferrari to go grocery shopping.”
Ok, she didn’t really say that (she was more apt to use phrases like “A penny saved is a penny earned” and “Waste not, want not”) but it sums up a good point: There is absolutely no reason to risk Brett Favre (and the season’s chances) in a meaningless preseason game.
Sure, Favre could benefit from rehearsing the playbook a bit more under game conditions. However, considering top WR Lavernanues Coles may not be in action, coach Eric Mangini’s decision got a little easier. Besides, the Jets can really use the game to determine their backup situation. Kellen Clemens vs. Brett Ratliff has been one of the most intriguing stories out of Jets camp this year.
Besides old #4, that is.

In your mind, who wins the battle for the back-up job? Or who has the edge at this point?

I think Clemens will get the job, though he will probably be on a short leash. I also think they will try to get Ratliff some actual reps at some point, even if Clemens doesn’t fail. They just love the kid that much.
