Chris Henry re-signs with the Bengals

In a somewhat surprising move the Bengals re-signed Chris Henry yesterday.  Marvin Lewis made it clear in no uncertain terms that it was Bengal’s President Mike Brown’s decision….

“I obviously know at the end of the day the owner has the final say-so on whether he wants to give a guy an opportunity or not… Mike has wanted to give Chris this opportunity and asked that we do the best job that we can to get him ready to play football and if he can be a positive influence on this team and help us win games and get better as a receiver. And if we feel that way after the suspension is over, then he has a chance to earn a spot. That’s what he asked me to do and that’s what we’re going to do.”  - Marvin Lewis

So, the Bengals locker room clean-up is over, I guess.  With 3 suspensions and 4 arrests Henry is the kind of player linked to the lawless Bengals of the last few years.  When asked about his relationship with the fans he said that he hoped… “the fans would allow me the chance to gain my trust back and proving myself and having the opportunity to turn everything around,”

However the quote about fans that had me feeling that this is a bad idea…

“There’s nothing I can say to them, I’ll prove it to my family and my teammates if it comes down to that. I greatly regret the mistakes.” Okay sounds like he is trying to say the right things, then it goes off the tracks… “It’s weird, they don’t actually know everything that happened. They just go off what they read. They don’t actually know what happened.”

Take responsibility for your actions 100%.  None of this ‘people don’t understand the circumstances’ BS.  We are talking 3 suspensions and 4 arrests, not 1 jay walking ticket.  Henry has a pattern.  He has to realize he is the problem and not the circumstances.   This cop-out left a sour taste in my mouth and has me thinking, I am not sure this is a real good idea.  I hope I am wrong but the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviour.  Henry’s past has been spotted at best.
