Als shine in victory over Argos

The Montreal Alouettes continued their dominance over eastern division opponents Friday night, beating the Toronto Argonauts 32-14. The Alouettes who have been known for their great first quarters, came out of the gate flat, trailing Toronto 4-3 at the end of the first quarter but that is as good as it got for the Argos who were down 11-7 at half time.
Toronto head coach Rich Stubler tried to wake up his offence by replacing starting quarterback Kerry Joseph with last years starter Michael Bishop. Neither of the two looked good and it is obvious that Toronto will have to look long and hard in the mirror during the bye week to figure out what is causing their offensive problems this season.
Getting back to the Als though. It is amazing how far this team has come. They started the season out 2-0 (beating Hamilton and Winnipeg) and it was all downhill from there. They took an early lead against Western Rivals Calgary, Saskatchewan and BC just to see them fade away in the second half. All is back to normal in Alouette land as they have now won 3 straight and have “pulled away” from the other 3 east division teams but it took some major bumps in the road to teach them how to win. Rookie coach Marc Trestman has finally realized that using Avon Cobourne in the second half will help preserve drives and kill valuable time off the clock. Don’t get me wrong I love seeing Anthony Calvillo throw for 400+ yards and 2 or 3 touchdowns per game but Cobourne is a very effective back who can definitely get the job done late in games. In fact Avon is on pace to become the first player in CFL history to rush for 1000 yards and to have 1000 yards receiving in the same season. Look for Avon to get a lot more touches as games wind down.
`Whats Next for the ALS: The Alouettes are going into the bye week with a comfortable lead atop the east division. They are 4 points ahead of second place Toronto and 6 points ahead of both Hamilton and Winnipeg. Les Oiseaux are back in action August 29th as they look for their first win against a western division team this season.
