Take A Drink, Kid…And Other Thoughts From Last Night’s RAW

“If you drink this shot of whiskey, I’ll consider you a man.”

“No, I’ll never drink that!  I’ll never be like you, Dad…I mean, JBL!”

No, the above dialogue didn’t actually take place last night in Richmond, Virginia.  However, the “drinking contest” between JBL and CM Punk had a definite “After School Special” vibe to it.

CM Punk lives a “Straight Edge” lifestyle.  He abstains from alcohol, as well as tobacco, drugs and casual sex.  I’m sure the writers used this in order to further illustrate how much of a heel JBL is that he would mockingly attempt to cause a person to renounce his views to avoid being labeled a coward or something worse.  The occasion also gave Punk the opportunity to illuminate the uninitiated about his lifestyle.

Rather than stage a ridiculous scenario like this one, the WWE ought to be airing public service announcements aimed at their young viewers using Punk as a role model.  I would think the youth of America would consider him a very cool guy and his message is a strong one.  I remember, once upon a time, a man who constantly urged kids to “say their prayers and eat their vitamins” and not to veer from the Straight & Narrow.  That man was Hulk Hogan.

Granted, Hogan was later exposed as a steroid user.  However, prior to that unfortunate fact, he brought waves of good publicity to the WWE.  Punk has refined his lifestyle to an even greater extent than Hogan ever did and should be the guy out front.  Turning America’s kids off to drugs and alcohol might be worth taking another shot at it.

Other thoughts from last night’s show:

- Speaking of Punk, the fans are finally starting to really take to him.  His ovation was almost Cena-esque in it’s volume.

- Remember the buildup the Highlanders got when they first arrived?  I wonder how much those vignettes of them cost.  Money well spent, Mr. McMahon, considering I completely forgot they were still on the roster.

- On a positive note, at least Cryme Tyme is back wrestling in regular tag team matches again.  Now that the Cena-Batista nonsense is out of the way, can we please get them into a program with Lil’ Dibiase/Rhodes?

- So, I’m assuming that Kane was alluding to the notion that he has kidnapped or otherwise harmed Rey Mysterio.  The good thing about kidnapping Rey is that you don’t need to make room in the trunk for him.  Kane could have simply crammed him into the glove compartment.

- It’s kind of funny how the only thing Cody Rhodes inherited from his dad is that truly distracting lisp.

- Cena’s soldier schtick is wearing a bit thin now.  His whole “I go to war every Monday night with a nation behind me” speech was met with a very “meh” crowd response.

- Santino has a definite future as an announcer.  I can hear him mangling wrestler’s names for years.

- Finally, I’d like to express my reaction to Cena and Batista dropping the belts by quoting from one my favorite movies, Fight Club:  “I am Jack’s Complete Lack of Surprise”.

Yeah it was pretty obvious that Cena and Batista would lose the belts, but the fight was pretty comedic. I enjoyed it their antics lol

Would one of them please turn heel? Having 2 faces going head to head is useless, especially with 2 of WWE’s biggest stars, and there isn’t even a belt on the line! This should of been the Main Event of Wrestlemania 25

Your thoughts on Punk ring true and make alot of sense. As for Rhodes, he is flat out awful. The guys body language is brutal, he looks so awkward even with the smallest of things, the guy looks so uncomfortable just walking down to the ring.

I love face vs. face or heel vs. heel, though. If I were a betting man, I’d say Cena might do the turn. He’s been getting some very mixed audience reaction lately and he always seems to be the agressor.

He’s trying too hard, Kev. IT should be obvious that, no matter what he does in his career, he will never be regarded in the same light as his famous father.

The angle they’re playing up may just do him more harm than good in the long run.

It would be odd to see him turn heel but I agree, lately the audience is turning on him!

Cena has had heat on him for the past year guys, there is no way Vince would turn his modern day Hulk Hogan heel, you know how bad merchandise sales would plummet?

If anyone is going heel, it’s going to be Batista, there’s been rumours for the past few months now, then again half of these things don’t come true.
