Takeo Spikes - The Newest Niner And Thoughts On The Preseason Opener

I guess my only reaction to the acquisition of Takeo Spikes is why not? The 49ers aren’t hurting at the linebacker position with young studs Patrick Willis and Manny Lawson in their mix, so adding a seasoned vet like Spikes, who many not have the same wheels as he used to, will at least help bring them along. Spikes will not be the focal point of the linebacking corps and is certainly an upgrade over Brandon Moore, who was released to bring Spikes in. Terms of the contract weren’t released, but from the outset, this doesn’t appear to be a bad signing. Bringing him in can’t hurt and that’s really all that matters.

Unfortunately, the 49er offense was about as anemic as you can expect in their opener against Oakland. Shaun Hill, JT O’Sullivan and Alex Smith were equally lousy and were unable to maintain any rhythm on offense. While this is only the preseason, it’s not a good sign when your performance is this pathetic against a crappy team like Oakland.
The quarterbacks weren’t the only ones to blame for this ugly loss. The Niners combined for four turnovers to Oakland’s zero. Not acceptable. There are too many kinks to work out right now and I’m not looking forward to them getting their butts kicked when the games start to count in early September.

Spikes may not be what he was before his devastating injury a few years back, but as you pointed out, he is an excellent lockerroom guy, and definately will not hurt the team. Depending on the terms of the deal, which I don’t anticipate being huge, this is a nice pick-up.
