Smackdown Rebound 08.01.08: That’s How You Cut A Promo!

Whether you are an old or present wrestling fan, who may or may not watch Smackdown, I implore to each and every one of you that if there is one episode you need to watch, this week was the one.  ‘The Cutting Edge’ segment with Edge and mystery guest Mick Foley, was the epitamy of all recent promos.  Mick is unbelievable on the mic, and Edge showed why he is a main eventer and top heel in the WWE.  I have not seen a promo with such passion and vigour since the Attitude Era, in the days of The Rock and Stone Cold.  The segment lifted the show to what truly was an otherwise mediocre Smackdown!

Other thoughts from Friday night:

-  MVP and Jeff Hardy is shaping up to be an interesting feud, I feel this needs something more than interfering in each other’s matches, however at least it is giving these two potential stars a decent feud for the time being.  On a side note, promos are now airing for the future debut of Ron ‘R-Truth’ Killings, a former TNA Champion.  His prison-criminal/changed my life gimmick is very similar to MVP’s personal life.  MVP spent 9 years in prison, and once he was released turned to wrestling to save his life.

- Looks like Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy might be in line for a push against US Champion Shelton Benjamin, let’s hope Benjamin doesn’t go down with an injury, or Kennedy gets busted for drugs again, ruining yet another push for the ’should’ be main eventer.  I would expect to see Kennedy win the title in September or October, given the proper airtime.

- Brian Kendrick’s new gimmick, ‘The Brian Kendrick’ is certainly interesting, anyone else think he looks a little like Leonardo DiCaprio?  Not that it’s going to get him anywhere, because there is not title that suits his size, even with his overly massive bodyguard ‘Ezekiel’.

- Mmmm…Maria made her debut this week, defeating Victoria.  I like Maria and she has improved greatly over the past months.  However, with Michelle McCool currently the WWE Divas Champion, I’m not sure where this push is going to get her either.

- Please WWE…give Big Show something to do besides squashing jobbers and facing off against monsters such as Umaga.  The guy has been withering since Wrestlemania, thanks to the fans making Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather the heel in their feud.  he needs a title program with Triple H…pronto

-Speaking of Triple H, he was off TV this week celebrating the birth of his newborn child Murphy Levesque.  Both child and mother are said to be doing fine.  Not that it matters whether he is on TV or not for the next couple of weeks, his feud with the Great Khali is more predictable than Will Ferrell’s next movie role (not that I have anything against Ferrell, I love the guy’s movies)

All in all, a rather bland show, but like I said the last 15 minutes more than make up for it.  Congrats to Edge and Foley for doing such a phenomenal job.

‘Til next time,

Will

Mick Foley’s contract is up soon and the WWE better resign him. He has really taken off as Smackdown’s colour commentor…plus his promo this last friday was incredible.

Indeed you are right bronco, I read this news today. I agree with you completely, Foley needs to be resigned, however I have also read rumours that he is unhappy with his current role because he is forced to deal with Vince McMahon and others yelling at him backstage through his headset. It will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks…
