Stamps Defeat Ticats

Reynolds runs for three touchdowns and Lewis catches two others as the Stamps defeat the Ticats 43-16. I won’t do a long blog, as Nich Hall did one for me. But I would like to do a small summary of why the Stamps won the game. And I won’t say it was because of Calgary scoring more points. (Even though they did score more points.)

TURN OVERS

The Stampeders’ defense pretty much confused Printers with their aggressive defense, forcing the Ticats to turn the ball over 6 times. Printers threw 2 interceptions and fumbled the ball away on other occasion. Rookie running back Smith fumbles the ball on the 30 yard line after the Stamps punted the ball over to the Ticats. Williams, coming in to mop up, throws an interception in the end zone, the last turn over being turned over on downs.

MOMENTUM SWINGS

Every time the Ticats cut the lead down to manageable deficit, the Stamps come right back. The Ticats march down the field, which starts on there 37 yard line. Printers directs a very nice looking drive that ends with a one yard plunge by Printers.

The problem is, the Stamps take the next drive straight down the field, ending with a pass to Lewis, his 2nd of the game, putting it 27-9. The Stamps end any kind of lift that Printers gave the Ticats earlier.

Late in the 2nd quarter Burris throws an interception with a little over a minute left. This could have been big for the Ticats, a late turn over in the half. Robinson made one of the best interceptions of the season, leaping and grabbing it with one hand; I have never seen a more athletic play this season.

The Ticats march down the field in what looks like a drive to cut into the Stamps lead. Printers throws a couple of nice passes, combined with a couple of runs by Smith and Anderson. Then there is an interception by Armour at the Stamps’ 17 yard line and the momentum gets killed again. The Ticats, instead of cutting the lead, blow an opportunity and the score remains 27-9 at the half.

Third quarter the Ticats come out like gang busters. They come out with a 5 play drive that takes a little over 2 minutes, ending with a beautiful run by Caulley into the end zone to cut the lead down to 27-16.

But the Ticats cannot hold onto the momentum. After the kick-off the Stamps come right back. Henry Burris leads a 12 play drive that takes a little over 5 and a half minutes. The drive ends with another Reynolds rushing touchdown, this time a one-yard scamper. The Ticats could not stop the Stamps’ offense the whole game.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

HAMILTON

Miles had 8 catches for 75 yards and was a calming influence on the Ticats’ offense. Miles will play a major role on the Ticats’ rebuilding this season. The Ticats will be an improved team. I still think they have a good chance of making the playoffs this season in the east.

CALGARY

Henry Burris threw for 345 yards, with 26 completions, for 33 attempts in the game. He had three dropped passes in the first half, so he could been even more impressive!

CONCLUSION

The Stamps played their best game of the season. The offense accumulated 506 yards of offense. The Defense got 6 turnovers, which is their best output of the season. But could Neil Lumsden have done a major upgrade on the Ticats offense?

Totally agree with your assessment, my Grey Cup pick certainly didn’t disappoint this week. Their ability to answer the call every time Hamilton scored was nothing short of demoralizing for the Cats.

Question now becomes can the Stampeders keep it going and do the Cats a favor by knocking Winnipeg to 0-5?
