Sorry Bengals fan, I truly am. I hate that the last few posts are focused on Chad Johnson. Unfortunately I would not be doing my job covering the team if I didn’t cover ‘As the Chad Turns’. So the latest news is that Chad will undergo ankle surgery on Wednesday as reported on NFL.com…

The surgery will reportedly remove bone chips from the ankle that have been hampering him since last season.  Johnson should be available for training camp as the recovery time for this procedure is relatively short. Here’s hoping that he stays out of the news for a while and when he shows up to camp he shows up ready to play and limits his quotes to the witty not the whinny…

I would not be suprised the least to see Chad take his time with his recovery and say his ankle just doesn’t feel right until they trade him now.
Like it or not Chad is the best player on this football team.

As suggested in the piece, why on earth did the guy wait until now to have this procedure done??

I see what you are saying in terms of pure talent. Also if you ranked him amongst other players at his position. He is top 5 but I would hasten to add that there are some pretty solid players on this club as well. Carson Palmer is certainly a top ten QB in this league. And while Chad is a super talent he is also a grand pain in the ass. That takes some lustre off the overall package….

I am sure that the Bengals would ask the same question. The only answer is that he is doing his best to irritate the situation to the point they want rid of him. It is fairly transparent. I guess $35M is not enough for him.

Carson Palmer is a very good QB yes. Chad Johnson also makes him better. I think you replace a guy like Palmer (even though he is a great teammate) easier than you replace a guy like Chad. Just ask Philly. I am sure they would rather have TO and a new QB instead of McNabb and Curtis….as much as Philly fans will say they would want nothing to do with TO.
This can only end poorly at this point. I personally don’t blame Chad for wanting to win. He simply is asking the club to make some moves to try and get better and they won’t. You can call it money or whatever you want but this guy wants to win bad. I don’t care how much he runs his mouth, because he backs it up on the field. 85 always plays hard between the lines and that is the 1 and only thing that matters in the NFL. Other teams are thrilled to bring on a guy like Hall in Oakland who run their mouths but don’t do all the much on the field….I would take Chad on my team any day of the week…because at the end of the day every guy in that room knows he will do anything possible to help his team win when he is out on the field.

Sandy I am not sure I agree. I see your point that a great receiver makes a QB better. I am certainly on board with that. I would not say that you can replace Palmer more easily than you could CJ.
Case in point Randy Moss. He was the best receiver in the league last year. In Oakland over a couple of years he couldn’t make a bad quarterback even average. He goes to New England with a great quarterback and is unstoppable.
It is sort of a chicken and egg thing. If your quarterback isn’t getting you the ball you can’t be great and if you aren’t making the incredible catches at key points he can’t be great.
So Chad must have had some benefit playing with Palmer, as has TJ. Having 2 probowl wide receivers means your QB is doing something right, right?
So personally I would take Palmer over Chad any day of the week. Ask any team how important a QB is and they will tell you #1 and they are real hard to find.
As far as Chad wanting to only win, well… I am not so sure. I think his back injury and ankle surgery get less press and his desire for the Bengals to improve the defence is less of a concern if he is making the $9-10M he has seen other top receivers sign for in the last year. Chad is a great talent, a great quote but a horrible teamate. He is a version of TO and we all know TO wears out his welcome quickly and it never turns out well in the end.

well I dont dispute QB is the #1 thing on a team…I just think Palmer is a guy you can replace. I am not saying with anyone or that it is even easy but Eli Manning just won the superbowl…come on now.
Randy Moss didnt try in Oakland so toss that out the window.
Obviously good qb’s make wrs better and good wrs make qbs better I just think personally Chad is the best player on this club. I am not saying this as a fan of Chad, or the Bengals…just a guy on the outside looking in.
Can you dispute that the Eagles would rather have Owens and a different QB than McNabb and Curtis at this point. Heck I am sure they would be better with Feely and Owens..
I do get how fans are angered by this junk from a guy..but he is their best player and if you arent going to accomadate him then you MUST trade him.

While they haven’t been winning with McNabb alone, TO did some irreparable damage to that team’s locker room IMO. I am sure that they would love to have the talent back but not the distraction. I must say that I am a hater when it comes to these kinds of antics. I am far more ‘my way or the highway’ type. That approach seems to work ok in New England.
Fans are angry because they love their team and this guy, who is supposed to be a hero, is turning on the team. Judas didn’t end up being too popular after the whole betrayal thing either. (Just kidding didn’t mean to rile up the religious types)
I think it is time for at least one team to take a stand. They don’t need Chad as much as he thinks. They have a solid QB. They have a probowl WR in TJ and a few young up and comming receivers (although I would have kept Gabriel). I say tell him to sit if he wants and fine him at every turn. They own him right now, not vice versa.
Plus, the way these kinds of deals work out in the NFL, you never get the return that you should. So would I grant him his wish for a 2nd round pick? Not a friggin’ chance. Let his a$$ rot and his value deteriorate….
