Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson

Did anyone catch Kimbo Slice vs James Thompson on CBS last night? What a fight. He is definitely something to watch. The story is here if you didn’t see the fight.

Whether you like MMA or don’t it is truely and exciting thing to watch. Even with all the brutality in an MMA fight, including this one, these fights have the power to draw and capitative people, one of the main things which sport is supposed to do. Looking forward to seeing what our MMA bloggers think. Talk to you all soon.

Kimbo Slice is one of my personal favourite athletes. Can he compete against elite fighters yet? No. But his striking is actually scary. He knocked the guys ear off for God’s sake! f he can round out his game, he will definitely be a force for a while in MMA. I also respect Kimbo because he’s from the streets but isn’t criminal element to the degree of a Mike Tyson or Pacman Jones. He takes care of his 5 kids. Even though he works for an adult entertainment company which some would suggest is immoral, I still give props to the guy for finding a way off the streets and a way to provide for his family. ALL DAY BABY! KIMBO SLICE!

I watched that “fight” on CBS last night.

      MADE FOR TV !!!

that fight was all set up from the beginning.

Kimbo was not doing anything from the bottom for over a minute, while taking shots from Thompson.

the fight should have been stopped, Kimbo wasnt trying to defend himself what so ever.

announcers couldnt sell Kimbo Slice enough, overkill.

the fight shouldnt have been stopped, just because the guy;s ear exploded. ;-P

Thompson took some serious shots, those upper-cuts were vicious, but he was still in there.

Why is CBS going after this sport ????

prime-time saturday night too, going up against UFC, on 2 channels, and another fight show on comcast.

didnt know it was on, very surprised when i found it channel surfin’.

Saturday night was my first time watching MMA and I was surprised that I actually did like it. It was much less brutal than I had been led to believe. Even though I’ve read that the refs were a little overzealous with their stoppages, it still seems as though they take a lot of care to make sure no one gets seriously hurt.

I came across the Kimbo Slice article in ESPN, my first exposure to him. He does seem like an incredible guy. However, I think the announcers went more out of their way to sell Thompson, who I initially thought was some sort of unbeatable force. In researching him, I’ve found him called names like “Tomato Can” and other unkind monikers.

I feel the same as you when Kimbo was on the bottom taking blows to the head and the ref didn’t stop it. However, I tend to go with a ref’s judgement than what we as observers think, although very possibly it could have been stopped. Very entertaining fight though. Kimbo is a monster.

Femi, I think the event did some great things with regards to getting MMA some mainstream media coverage as well as getting the average person talking about MMA. He first half of Rome today was dedicated soley to MMA, and almost very call and email was about the Elite XC event. Although I thought the event was pathetic and poorly run (it went 45 minutes over the scheduled network schedule and we only got 3 minutes of fighting the first hour of the event), I think it did good things for MMA as a whole. Thoughts?

I would have to agree that it absolutely did great things for MMA. I don’t think we’ve ever had so many different people talking about an MMA event here on STB.

I think the event was very entertaining and i think the UFC should be a little worried. They’ve released so many fighters just because there is so much talent in the sport now, that people can watch events put on by these smaller companies and know the fighters and be just as entertained. Why pay 50 bucks to watch something when you can be just as entertained for free.

I do have to say though that i agree that kimbo was a bit favoured in this fight. It absolutely should’ve been stopped when he was on the ground doing absolutely nothing. Yes i know that the shots were clearly not causing a lot of damage, but the rules are that the fight should be stopped if the fighter is not intelligently defending themselves and i’m sorry but lying on the ground doing nothing except trying not to cry is not intelligently defending yourself. Kimbo’s cardio was horrible, but he is being trained by one of the best and he is entertaining, but like he said he has a long way to go! The fight shouldn’t have been stopped when it did, Kimbo got lucky!!!

I also actually found the girls fight pretty entertaining as well!

Over all i really enjoyed the event. I’ve seen a lot of the smaller events and they have a hard time holding my attention. Like i said the UFC should be a little worried.

I’m really gald that you saw that the rumours about MMA and how brutal it is are false! I think if more people gave it a chance they’d realize that they do find it entertaining and it’s not this horrible fight to the death that the media portrays it to be. There’s a UFC on this weekend, hopefully you tune in!

I agree with you totally Brad. The event drew 4.9 million viewers, which is the most ever for an MMA event in history. The majority of those viewers, 6.5 million of them, tuned in when Slice ended Thompson (with the help of the ref) during the end of the third round. The legend that is Kimbo Slice is defintely a must see for fans of MMA.

They definitely have to work on the timing thing though like you pointed out. As well, overall the quality of the entire event needs to be improved if Elite XC will be considered legit competition for the UFC.

It’s not that kimbo should have lost that fight, he did lose it. It’s just CBS and EliteXC now have too much vested to allow Big Dan to stop that fight after collossus landed only 40 unanswered blows to kimbo’s head, followed by a premature stoppage in kimbo’s favour at their first oppurtunity.

He didn’t knock his ear off, that ear was doomed from the get go. It was broken to hell. I’ve had broken ear’s but not that bad, get that thing drained before a fight man, those big dumbo wings are lik a bulls eye, but hardly a reason to stop a fight.

Anyone who disagrees see my post on UFC rules….

Oh yea, but i guess this is eliteXC i shhould have added one more rule: Ref is not allowed to stop fight until Big name 2-0 fighter that your whole company is built around lands one shot.

      Brutal
