The Chicago Cubs finished the sweep of the Pirates for the second time this season and now will face the New York Mets. The Mets should provide a good test and allow the Cubs to see how they look against a team that should contend for the title this season.
Chicago has played solid baseball up to this point in the season but it has been far from fantastic. The slow start of Soriano was topped of with a trip to the 15 day DL and hopefully he is working at full speed when he gets back. Fukudome and D Lee continue to be very bright spots for this club along with some steady pitching. The best thing to take from the weekend is the fact that they put up 13 runs in back to back games! finally the bats that everyone thought would be going for the Cubs have started up.
Zambrano takes on Maine to start the series! should be a good one.

Cubs at Jays less than 2 months away! Like you said, half the Cubs wins have come at the expense of the Pirates. Mets should be a good early test.

Hey Sandy, I was watching a Cubs game when I was down in Philly about a week ago (otherwise I never get to see the Cubs) and I noticed Zambrano’s fastball was around 89, occassionally hitting 91 on the gun. Is this normal for him now? His fastball still had great movement so he was still dominate, but I was always under the impression that he brings it at more like mid to low 90’s. Has he lost a few miles over the years?

He is throwing his best when he is hitting spots and not just winding back and letting go. His cut fastball will be around the high 80’s to low 90’s and his fastball will max out in the mid 90’s. Zambranos biggest asset is that he throws 4 very good pitches in a curve, slider, splitter and fastball. He can often try and overpower guys which isn’t really his thing. Z is great when working the ball to both sides of the plate and letting his pitches do the work.

I guess the short answer would of been no. Those are normal numbers for Z’s cut fastball.

Okay that would explain the variations on his fastball velocity readings. Plus it should help his arm, as people were always waiting for it to fall off after the Baker years. Gotta love the guy’s intensity on the mound, lol

Ya Z is a fun guy to watch. He also makes his at bats very fun to watch as he can go yard or break his bat over his leg.
He likes to win no doubt about that.
