Quite a bit to report on day one of free agency.

Additions

1. DeShaun Foster has signed a 2-year / $1.8 Million contract.

2. Allen Rossum has signed a 1-year / $870,000 contract.

3. Dontarrious Thomas has signed a 2-year contract.

4. J.T. O’Sullivan has signed a 1-year / $645,000 contract.

Subtractions

1. Justin Smiley has signed a 5-year contract with Miami.

2. Kwame Harris is close to signing with Oakland.

From the early going, it seems the 49ers have added some quality depth players, but it appears they are going to have to find some new bodies to fill the void left on the offensive line.

On another note, the 49ers have picked up Alex Smith’s option for 2010. General Manager Scot McLoughan said the move indicates that the team “has faith in (Smith).” It’s certainly setting up for a heated battle for the quarterback job at camp.

More to come as it develops (especially if the Niners bring in a wide receiver).

Well, I didn’t even mention the linebacker position in my free-agency preview.  Nevertheless, the Bills made their first move on that front acquiring former Giants starter Kawika Mitchell.  The Buffalo News is reporting that Mitchell is expected in Buffalo later this afternoon to ink a deal. 

On the defensive tackle front, it is also being reported that Jacksonville’s Marcus Stroud will be visiting the Bills today in hopes of initiating a trade.  Stroud is not a free agent, but is a former Pro Bowler.

Kiwaukee Thomas is the most recent member of the 2007 roster to receive a pink slip.  Thomas, who missed roughly half of last season due to injury, was normally the Bills’ nickel back.  The play of Jabari Greer may have made Thomas expendable.  In addition, it is possible that Buffalo is happier than I thought with Ashton Youboty, who is about to enter his 3rd season.
