Two or three years ago, the unimaginable match up between the iceman and the axe-murderer was truly an MMA fans dream come true. Two of combat sports elite strikers, both with a knack for the knockout and carrying dynamite in both hands and feet.

Two or three years ago this match up would never have happened.

The recent acquisition of Pride by the UFC and the subsequent signing of a handful of marquee fighters had initially left most fans tingling with anticipation.

For you professional wrestling fans; was this to be the all-time greatest merger; ousting the WCW and WWF? Were we to see fights reminiscent of the “Mega Powers exploding” (Macho man Randy Savage Vs Hulk Hogan?). Or were we more likely to see repeats of a dying dynasty and a series of battles between washed up, albeit iconic “Hogan and Flairs?”

So now the fight is set to happen on December 29th.

UFC 79…”Nemesis” they’re calling it.

I’m trying to envision how this fight might go. We certainly won’t witness the face stomps to a downed opponent that made wandy so destructive in pride. Perhaps we’ll see Wanderlei standing idly by as chuck lays on the ground with neither having any idea what to do next. Does episode 6 of TUF featuring Ben Saunders vs Daniel Barrera ring a bell to anyone?

Let’s hope this is not the case.

As for Chuck, this one trick pony has been shown for what he is, his timing is off, and his opponents have figured him out. With the loss of Couture, and Tito’s lackluster performances, he’s the last of a dying breed.

So…a dream match-up? Perhaps. Will I be paying my $40 to watch it all? Damn right. I guess that makes it Dana Whites dream Match up. But then again I paid $40 to watch Rashad and Bisbing.

For today’s fan this is anything but a dream match-up, as it’s about 3 years too late. In light of the recent DVD release of “28 weeks later” I vote this card be re-named “UFC 79 - 156 weeks later.”
